French Polynesia braces for cyclone impact

Updated February 4, 2010 17:01:05

French Polynesia is bracing for what could be one of the worst storms in a decade. Tropical storm Oli strengthened overnight and was heading for the main islands of Tahiti and Moorea. Schools and businesses have been closed, the airport has been shut down, and some people have booked into hotels rather than stay in their homes as the storm closes in. The ferry between Papeetee and Moorea had to battle 5m waves to get back to port, when a warning that sea conditions were unsafe was issued after it had already left.
