Pacific on course for mobile phone banking

Updated February 5, 2010 16:35:13

By the end of this year, thousands of people in the Pacific may be able to do their banking using a mobile phone. Mobile phone banking has already been used to great effect in Asia and Africa, giving people in remote and rural communities access to banking services. Now the service is being extended across the Pacific, with assistance from the Pacific Financial Inclusion Program - a joint project of the United Nations, the European Union and the Australian and New Zealand Governments.

The PFIP says pilot projects could get underway within the next three months in Pacific nations with strong mobile networks, including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Samoa.
