Pacific states get UN praise for poverty fight

The United Nations has congratulated Pacific countries for the progress they have made on a strategy - the so-called Mauritius Strategy - to help small island developing states combat poverty.

The head of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Dr Noeleen Heyzer, is in Vanuatu for a series of meetings with political leaders and island nation bureaucrats.

Yesterday she addressed a meeting aimed at reviewing the strategy in the light of the Global Economic Crisis.
