'Blue dog' Democrat says Hawaii voters want moderation
Updated
One of the Democratic Party candidates in the special election for Congressman in Hawaii says he's running as a centrist candidate, not an extremist.
The seat, representing Hawaii's first congressional district, is being vacated by Neil Abercrombie, a long-serving Congressman who wants to concentrate on running for Governor later this year.
Ed Case is running against Republican Charles Dijou and, in a twist brought about by Hawaii's unique election laws, another Democrat, State Senator Colleen Hanabusa. Mr Case is identified as a moderate, or "blue dog" democrat, while Ms Hanabusa is a supporter of the more liberal wing of the party which backs President Barak Obama. The latest polls show Ed Case well in the lead against his two opponents. Bruce Hill asked him if, having seen all the snow and ice on the US mainland lately, he was still sure he wanted to leave Hawaii to represent the State in what looks like a very cold Washington DC.
