Customary land rights undermined in Melanesia

Updated April 19, 2010 09:04:32

Most of the land across Melanesia is controlled by clans and families, and there are usually no written land titles and people own land collectively without being able to sell it. The latest report from the NGO AID/WATCH, entitled "In Defence of Melanesian Customary Land", looks at the impact of Australian aid and development programs in the Pacific. It also analyses the Australian government development agency, AusAid's, specific policy on customary land.
