Mobile phones seem to be the answer to many problems, like communications, education or even payment systems in poorer or developing nations. However, in many cases they're still too expensive to be used by the people who really need them. But what if there was a way to use free software and some cheap hardware to create a sustainable telephone network for your community? An engineer from Adelaide in South Australia thinks this could very soon become a reality. David Rowe has been working in Dili, East Timor on what's called the Village Telco project. He told Ryan Egan that it aims to provide low cost telephony to small communities, using wifi and open source software.
