PNG Carterets reaction to growing Pacific islands report

Updated June 15, 2010 16:32:10

For years we've been told that small pacific islands are about to disappear as a result of climate change. But findings released in the New Scientist magazine recently are set to challenge that thinking. A long term study by geologists has revealed that many islands in the central pacific are actually getting bigger and they're not at risk of sinking.

But, what do people on islands that are already experiencing the devastating effects of rising sea levels think about this latest research?

The people of the Carterets Islands, in Papua New Guinea, are the first entire people to officially be evacuated because of climate change. Their islands are being swallowed by the sea and their crops of banana, taro and breadfruit destroyed by storm surges and king tides.
