Microfinance could help PNG benefit from gas boom
Updated
Microfinance could play a key role in helping Papua New Guineans get the most out of the economic boom expected as a result of new gas developments, according to one of the world's leading microfinance experts. Vijay Mahajan, from the Indian livelihood promotion organisation BASIX, is Chair of the Consultative Group to assist the Poor, a global microfinance forum of more than 30 bi-lateral, multi-lateral and non-government organisations.
Mr Mahajan has just spent a week in the Pacific where he found some microfinance organisations are having problems getting people to pay back their small loans. If loans are not repaid, the future of these valuable institutions is thrown into doubt.
