It is now confirmed that among the three Australians and a New Zealander killed in a plane crash on Misima island in Papua New Guinea was a chief pilot from the airline involved in Australia's worst air disaster.

The Trans Air plane overshot the runway on the island on Tuesday and reportedly smashed into trees, bursting into flames.

The one surviving New Zealander on the plane is being evacuated from PNG to receive medical attention.
