Pacific wetlands plan updated for new environment concerns

Updated September 3, 2010 09:13:15

A new three-year plan has been drafted to promote and strengthen the effective use and conservation of wetlands in the Pacific region. The Regional Wetlands Action Plan follows on from an earlier agreement endorsed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program in 1999.

The new plan also precedes the international Ramsar Convention on Wetlands which commits nations to the conservation and wise use of wetland areas.

Vai Jungblut is the Ramsar officer for Oceania and says that wetlands are a crucial element of the Pacific's environment.
