The Australian state of Queensland's new special trade representative to Papua New Guinea, Jeremy Blockey, says he hopes to help add hundreds of millions of dollars to the value of trade with PNG over the next few years.

Mr Blockey takes up his post this morning. When the appointment was announced in the Queensland parliament last week, Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the trade repesentative's job is particularly aimed at boosting trade between far north Queensland and PNG.

Mr Blockey's is president of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and director of Advance Cairns, as well as the principal of the Cairns-based, Blockey Consulting. He says he sees a bright future for Queensland-PNG relations.
