NZ health boards defend radiographer negotiations

Thousands of surgeries are due to be cancelled in New Zealand from today when medical lab workers embark on a nationwide strike. Hundreds of patients are already being added to hospital backlogs when radiographers began walking off the job on Friday.

Participating unions issued hundreds of notices last week, urging members to limit their work responsibilities, forcing at least two hospitals to cancel all elective surgery.

The Union representing radiographers, APEX, told Pacific Beat last week that negotiations with District Health Boards over back-dated pay rises and working conditions had failed.
