Location of NZ quakes on previously unknown fault
Updated
Aftershocks are continuing in New Zealand's quake-hit Canterbury region today with a truly frightening 5-magnitude quake striking Christchurch directly and just one kilometre below the surface an hour ago.
Reports are flying this morning that it measured 6.1 in magnitude. While we can now dismiss those reports as wrong, the people of Christchurch would definitely feel that it was a very strong tremor.
Seismologist John Ristau with New Zealand's geological monitoring service, GeoNet Science, says this rupture of a previously unknown fault, covered with ancient deposits, is very peculiar.
