No decision to declare state of drought in Fiji
Updated
A high-level meeting in Fiji has failed to come up with a decision on whether to declare a state of drought for the entire nation. The National Drought Steering Committee met this morning, but decide to wait and see if the situation continues to deteriorate - before making a declaration.
Fiji has experienced three seasons of below average rainfall, devastating crops and jeopardising clean water supplies. The Meteorological Office today revealed that if the prolonged dry continues until the end of October, it will have worse social and economic impact on the country than the 1997-1998 drought. That dry spell is reported to have cost the country more than one hundred million dollars.
