PNG election results expected next week

Updated 19 July 2012, 10:44 AEST

The Electoral Commission says the 111 parliamentary seats will be declared before the writs are returned next week.

Commissioner Andrew Trawen has set next Wednesday for his returning officers to complete counting and declare the results.

He says that will give him ample time to calculate seats won by each party to advice the Governor-General to invite that party to form a coalition government.

So far 25 out of the 111 parliamentary seats have been declared. Caretaker Prime Minister Peter O'Neill's People's National Congress party has won seven.

Speaker: Andrew Trawen, PNG Electoral Commissioner
