A Fijian academic has been given a grant of A$460,000 to run a major research project about Pacific regional security issues.

Dr Ratuva, a political sociologist, says the project will involved several researchers, and end up being turned into a book.

He'll be looking at case studies involving Fiji, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Tonga.

Dr Steven Ratuva tells Bruce Hill he'd like to challenge the idea that the Pacific is an "arc of instability", containing failed and failing states.
