A large tsunami generated by an earthquake very close to New Zealand would hit before sirens activated.

That's according to a new report which also warns New Zealanders they will experience a tsunami in their lifetime.

The report's been prepared by GNS Science for the New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management.

Campbell Cooney asked GNS geologist Graham Leonard how the report came about, and what it means for the Pacific.

Presenter: Campbell Cooney

Speaker: Graham Leonard, geologist from GNS
