PNG: PM due to announce cabinet this week

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare is expected to announce his full cabinet by the end of this week.

Sir Michael Somare has appointed an eleven member care-taker government after his election last week. His ruling National Alliance party is holding talks on how to cater for its 13 coalition partners. The party's Highlands group is reportedly demanding the Deputy Prime Minister's portfolio along with several senior economic ministries including Works, Transport and Civil Aviation. The Prime Minister's spokeswoman, Betha Somare says the full cabinet will not be known till the weekend. Betha 10 -seconds ''They are anticipating that in the next couple of days. But I am not so definite and that is their prerogative when they will announce it because they are still in discussion''. With only 28 ministerial portfolios, party leaders and some of those 80 members who voted Sir Michael Somare are likely to miss out. Firmin Nanol-Port Moresby.
