US, Australia urge Pakistan to hold elections
Updated
Australia and the United States are urging Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf to hold elections.
US President George W Bush says he put forward the position in his first direct conversation with General Musharraf since he declared a state of emergency last Saturday.
Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander Downer, says he expects civil instability to continue in Pakistan and he is urging General Musharraf to work towards a poll in January.
"The reason he's declared the state of emergency is he's concerned the Supreme Court would rule his recent election or re-election, if you could call it that, unconstitutional," he said.
"That's partly because he's chief of the army, so he needs to stand down from the position.
"He's promised he will, so lets see him do it."
