Australia's Immigration Minister Chris Evans has expressed his support for a seasonal worker scheme for the Pacific.
Senator Evans expressed his support as a part of his explanation of a major change to Australia's immigration laws, to help meet labour shortages. In April the Australian government indicated it was looking seriously at a guest worker scheme, based on the one being used in New Zealand's fruit fields. But the government has demanded that it be provided with hard evidence the employment needs cannot be met by Australians. And over the past month both employers and unions have been involved in providing that evidence, also lobbying in support of a proposed guest worker scheme.
