Deadline looms for Pacific sea bed claims

Pacific Island countries have only a year left to get their claims to the ocean bed heard by a United Nations Committee.
Fiji, Solomon islands, Kiribati, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Cook Islands can all claim area beyond their 200 kilometre Exclusive Economic Zones under article 75 of the international law of the sea. Masio Nidung, Papua New Guinea's maritime boundary coordinator says the claims have nothing to do with fish stocks, but concentrate on ownership of the mineral rich sea floor.
