An Australian defence think tank says the intervention in Solomon Islands shows some of the weaknesses in Australia's national security system. The Kokoda Foundation says the Australian-led intervention in the Solomons has become a holding operation. The Foundation's study of Australia's national security planning says Canberra responds well to emergencies in the region, but doesn't give time and attention to longer-term challenges. The Kokoda chairman, Professor Ross Babbage, says after nearly five years, the Solomons intervention shows the need for broader thinking.
