A state funeral will be held in Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby today for Joseph Kabui, the man who helped bring peace to Bougainville.

As Pacific Correspondent Campbell Cooney reports, Mr Kabui died over the weekend.

"Joseph Kabui was appointed as the first president of the autonomous Bougainville provincial government, after 16 years of seccessionist violence which left over 10 thousand people dead. On Saturday, in Bougainville's capital Buka, Mr Kabui died in hospital of a heart attack, aged 54. This morning in PNG's capital Port Moresby a state funeral service will be held in his honour. Deputy Prime Minster Doctor Puka Temu says Mr Kabui deserves to be honoured for his role in bringing peace to region. After today's service Mr Kabui's body will return with his family to Bougainville for burial."
