A government spokesman in the Cook Islands says traditional leaders who have declared themselves the country's new rulers may end up being abolished themselves. Eight of the 15 chiefs in the House of Ariki, an advisory body of traditional leaders, last week announced they were dissolving the government. They are being advised by Bruce Mita, a New Zealand Maori who used to be the director of a funeral home in Australia. He claims to have the backing of wealthy Americans.
