New survey suggests majority of Indonesians favour Islamic law

Indonesia's former President Abdurrahman Wahid has criticised the government's imposition of curbs on a controversial Islamic sect, urging the "silent majority" of moderate Muslims to speak out in defence of religious tolerance. Gus Dur's comments on the restrictions declared against the Ahmadiyya movement came as a new pubic opinion poll revealed the majority of Indonesians would like to see the introduction of at least some form of Islamic law.
