US maritime sanctuaries plan welcomed

In the Northern Marianas, an environmental group has welcomed US plans to consider parts of the Pacific Ocean marine sanctuaries or monuments. President George W Bush has announced plans to protect some areas of the Pacific under American jurisdiction, as so-called "marine monuments". The areas being considered for protection include an atoll near American Samoa and the waters surrounding the uninhabited northern islands of the Marianas.
