Australia won't tail Japanese whalers
Updated
The Australian Government has announced what's long been expected that it won't be tailing Japan's whalers in the Southern Ocean this summer with its own ship.
The then newly-elected Rudd Government caused a diplomatic stir last year when it sent the customs vessel, the Oceanic Viking, to gather evidence for possible legal action against Japan. This year's decision is already coming in for criticism from the Opposition, which says the government has gone soft on the Japanese whalers. But perhaps unsurprisingly its being welcomed in Japan - as a sign of 'good faith' over ongoing negotitations at the International Whaling Commission.
