Australia tells Pacific it will gain from free trade

Australia has moved to reassure Pacific states that they do stand to gain from the push for free trade in the region.

There's been scepticism in the region about proposed free trade arrangements. Some studies have shown that revenue to island states could fall significantly under free trade deals and some states believe Australia and New Zealand are working only in their own interests. Australia's comments on the issue came as ministers from the APEC countries concluded talks in Peru, dominated by the global financial crisis and the push to revive and conclude the failed Doha round of free trade talks. On the line to Peru, our Canberra correspondent Linda Mottram asked Australia's Trade minister Simon Crean about the result.
