A former guerilla fighter James Tanis is the new president elect of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. Mr Tanis who took up arms against supporters of the Panguna Copper Mine says Bougainvilleans have been isolated from decision making processes over the last few years. Irreconcilable differences over the Panguna copper mine divided the landowners and local communities before it was closed in 1988 during the provinces 10 year long civil war. Mr Tanis won the recent bi-election following the death of former president, Joseph Kabui in June.
