Solomon Islands win first gold medal

The Solomon Islands have won their first Gold medal of the 13th South Pacific games in Apia, Samoa.

Steve Hassett reports, tennis player Micheal Leong won his final in the men's singles 6-1 6-1 over good friend Juan Langton of Samoa.

He was very proud of what he had achieved for his country.

He said: "Oh it's a lot, I mean our country, if I'm correct, hasn't got one yet. I mean there's events going on and to get gold for my country is something special and I hope it continues and for the rest of the country for the sports they play they do their best and try their best for their country."

Team coach Joel Benjamin told Radio Australia 's John Papik that he hopes this win will mean the equal distribution of funds to all sports in the Solomon Islands, including tennis.
