Tính từ này có nghĩa độc đoán, hống hách.
‘She is an overbearing mother.’
‘Overbearing’ cũng là động từ tiếp diễn của ‘overbear’ có nghĩa là đè nén, đàn áp hay áp bức.
Sinh trưởng trong gia đình gốc Á không hề dễ đối với các bạn trẻ thuộc thế hệ di dân thứ hai tại Australia. Tuy nhiên, Diana Nguyễn và Fiona Châu đã tìm được sự giải thoát cho những bức xúc của họ thông qua hài kịch.
A community worker and a teacher, the two young Vietnamese Australian women also share a passion for acting. Diana majored in drama at university, while Fiona has been active in community theatre.
But their career choices couldn’t be further away from what their parents had in mind. Diana says her mum always wanted her to become a doctor and buy a big house by the age of 25. Fiona also struggled with similar expectations.
Ironically, these experiences have become the main inspiration for their last year’s sold-out comedy ‘Phi & Me’.
Diana plays ‘Mẹ’, a Vietnamese migrant mother who tries to push her son, Phi, played by Fiona, into studying medicine.
“She’s quite a character,” Fiona says.
The show takes a light-hearted look at an overbearing mum and the clash between two generations in a migrant family.
When asked how their mothers took it when told their daughters wanted to be actresses, Fiona replies with a big giggle.
“We didn’t tell them. They found out when we were on a poster!”
To Diana and Fiona’s relief, their mothers both came to see their live show and even laughed with other audience members.
Encouraged, the duo created a second show for the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, called ‘Phi & Me Too’.
This time, Phi has grown up and most of the jokes are about divergent views on love, sex and marriage, and the ‘big fat wedding’ he has never wanted.
“It’s all from the weddings we attended, or the stories we heard from people who attended Vietnamese weddings. So I don’t think anything (in the show) is made up,” says Fiona.
Diana hopes the show can inspire young people who are experiencing similar growing pains to theirs.
“I guess the end message is to be who you want to be. We are the new generation.”
